About IELTS Examination
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English, and was established in 1989. IELTS is one of the major English-language tests in the world, others being the TOEFL, PTE and OET. Over 3 million tests are taken each year.
The test has two versions: Academic – for people applying for higher education or professional registration, and General Training – for those migrating to Australia, Canada and New Zealand, or applying for secondary education, training programs and work experience in an English-speaking environment.
Test format – IELTS has four modules – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking modules but different Reading and Writing modules depending on whether they are taking the Academic or General Training version of the test. The total test time is 2 hours 45 minutes. Candidates are graded on a 9-band scale: Band score 1 (non-user) to Band score 9 (expert user). Scores are reported in whole and half bands.
